Researched Argument Synthesis

Purpose Statement
Purpose:  I was in my Microbiology lecture class when I first heard about bacteriophages. We learned that they are viruses that breach the membrane of bacteria and infect them. We also learned about bacteriophage therapy, using bacteriophages to get rid of a bacterial infection in people, but it is not tested or used in the United States. Finding out this type of treatment could be available made me wonder about bacteriophage therapy and motivated me to write my research paper on the topic. I think that my audience will be interested and will be surprised of this alternative bacterial treatment. I think they will also feel hopeful that the US will pick up this treatment and use it on some of the bacterial infections that do not respond to antibiotics. I am writing about my topic because I want my audience to be aware of the treatments that could be available for people but the US does not use it. I think the best possible outcome to my research paper would be my audience understanding my topic and feeling motivated to try to promote the treatment’s research. The worst possible outcome would be that my audience would not understand my topic and they would dismiss the chance that bacteriophage therapy is useful to cure infections. To avoid the worst outcome, I will make sure to explain my main points very clear and in normal English so my audience can understand what I am arguing.
Audience:  My audience will be of age that they can understand concept in science and can act on their thoughts about it. I think my audience should be students who are studying a science major and have a background in biology. My audience needs to understand that there are alternative treatments, which are not fully discovered, and they could be better for treating an illness. When my audience encounters my paper, they should be interested in my topic from the title and intrigued to read the paper after reading my Abstract. They should want to learn more about my topic.

Context:  The time of communication should be around the leisure time of my audience. I want my audience to be relaxed and interested, so I feel reading during free time would do just that. My paper should be like reading a good book to them, informative and entertaining. The place of communication can be anywhere as long as my audience is comfortable and relaxed. For example, my audience will be more interested in my paper if they are curled up on their couch after all long day in class then they would if they were reading in between classes in a cold cafeteria. The time and place of communication play into the audience interest in the paper and the understanding. Reading my paper in a rush or when they are stressed would not do my papers purpose. With the desired time and place, my paper can be a very effective and enjoyable paper to read.
Design Plan
Strategies:  My strategy for my paper is to be very descriptive and informative but also convincing. Although research papers are not argumentative, I want to convince my audience that this is a good alternative antibiotic if the US would just be willing to try it out. I want to explain my topic very thoroughly so my audience can understand everything about bacteriophages and how they can be used for treatment.
Ethos:  For ethos, I will make sure to fully explain my sources so my audience and understand their credibility. In addition, I am going to make sure my tone of the paper is professional so my audience can understand me too.
Pathos:  For pathos, I would like to make sure to stress the importance of phage therapy, and how they could help many people. I was explaining that resistance to antibiotics is common now so many people are stuck with unpleasant disease unless they are treated with phage therapy.
Logos:  For logos, I plan to make my paper very well explained through so my audience can understand what I am saying. This will also help my audience understand that my topic is very logical and the best argument.
Medium:  For my medium, I plan to make my paper structured in APA format. For this format, I need to have 1-inch margins, a title page, abstract, page numbers and headings to each section of my paper. I will also need to have a Works Cited page at the end of my paper to state the sources I used for my paper. I am doing APA instead of MLA format because in nursing we will be only using APA so I need to learn how to do a paper in this format. I will also use Times New Roman font in 12 point. I am going to add a few pictures to help explain my topic but I think I will only use a few. I think the pictures will be a very helpful tool for my audience to visualize my topic and the methods of the bacteriophage.
Arrangement:  I am going to arrange my paper in the proper way following the APA guidelines. I will make my margins all set at one inch and I will have my paper in the normal left text alignment.  All of my pictures will be on the right side of my paper so my audience can read first, and then see the picture as reference. My arrangement will work well to communicate my paper in the best ways possible.

Reflection
This paper was a fun paper to do because we could use our own ideas and research them. Using the template given for the argument synthesis paper, I constructed my body paragraphs first and I made sure to use scholarly articles and books. I used my bibliography as a guide to add in information I needed when I was quoting. In regards of my purpose statement and design plan, I think followed it pretty well. I did narrow my topic down to research done on bacteriophage therapy so I could use better sources. I think my audience changed from medical professionals and researchers to college students and professors. I needed to be realistic with my expectations of my paper and the new audience worked better. I also made sure to add information about the authors of the articles which I know is an important piece to completing a quote. Overall, I think I did very well on this paper and I feel that I will get a grade appropriate to that. I worked very hard on the paper and I am satisfied with my results.

Closing Statement

I think that my synthesis paper about college graduates in the working world reflected my purpose statement and design plan well. I used my design plan as a guide on how to write my paper. I think that I expressed my argument well and I did well to convince my audience. I used the exact medium and arrangement that I stated in my design plan to make my paper look very proper and professional. I think that I got my point across and I made a strong point about how students should be cautioned about their future. I feel that I should have had a stronger contrast to my argument so I could have as a much stronger point. I will make sure to write a full contrast paragraph in my next synthesis paper so make my argument strong and seem like the most logical choice. I think my synthesis of each source was very descriptive and very “spelled out” to my audience so they do not need to think when they read. I also think I did address my audience well and helped them understand that they should be concerned about the topic. Other than the lack of rebuttal, I think that my paper reflected my design plan and I used my sources well to support my argument.

What I care about.

For my topic of my research paper I have decided to talk about Bacteriophage therapy. I learned this concept in my microbiology class and I was interested to why it is not used for treatments. Bacteriophage (Phage) Therapy is using a virus that attacks only bacteria to be used a new antibiotics. Medical professionals do not use this therapy in the US. Although other countries have worked on testing the alternative treatment, phage therapy is still not being used for bacterial infections. Because of the oher use of antibiotics, more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to the medications used. Without the antibiotics, people will nto be able to get better.

The topic matters to everyone! Anyone can get a bacterial infection if it is a urinary tract infection or impedigo, bacterial infections are common. With antibiotics becoming resistant to many microbes, people are unable to be treated and could die. My topic dicusses the alternative treatment of bacterial infections and how it could be the solution to the resistance we have today. If there is a new treatment that could help people should know about it. Having phage therapy to treat resistant strains of an infection could save lives! This is why people need to know about my topic for the health of their friends and family.

Writing Project 3: Arguement Synthesis

Purpose Statement and Design Plan for Sythesis Paper

Purpose Statement

The purpose of my synthesis paper is to analyze a group of authors talking about the future and the workplace and how it will change the dynamics of work and hiring. I was assigned this paper and I plan on picking a position on what changes should be made and how it will effect college graduates. I hope that my audience will understand that the topics I stress will affect their lives too. I hope that my audience feels concerned for the future and will prepare for what is ahead. Although this topic was assigned to me, I feel that learning about what to expect for the future will really benefit me when I start searching for a job. I hope that my paper will help my audience feel prepared for the future too. the best possible outcome for my paper would be that my audience would truly understand my argument and the different views that I express in my sources. The worst possible outcome would be that people do not understand where I am going with my paper and feel that it is disorganized. In this case, I plan on making my paper very well structured and clear to my audiences. I think that in any situation my paper would be very well communicated because it is an academic paper and it is an easy read.

My audience will be college students who are either picking their majors or near graduating who are preparing for their future jobs. They should be willing to consider my idea and need to be open-minded about what the future entails for them. Maybe my audience will read my paper in  a class or outside of class. I would hope they would be in a position to think about their own future when reading my paper. They need to understand that they will also be effected in the changes coming up in the next couple years. My audience should also be willing to act on their concerns to change their future if they feel it may be headed in the wrong direction from the change.

The time of communication should be around the time classes are in session or shortly after school. Because my paper is academic, I need my audience in the right frame of mind to fully understand my paper. Just leaving class or being in class helps my audience have their mind open to new knowledge and ideas. The place of communication should be outside of a classroom or in a classroom to have the right setting.

Design Plan

Strategy: I plan on stating my argument right away so my audience understands what the paper will be about. I will use five sources and I will make sure to fully explain each quote so my audience understands. Not everyone understands synthesis, so I will be sure to explain what I did with my sources when I state my argument. I want to make my argument very strong so I can convince my audience to agree with my ideas. I want my audience to understand that they need to be concerned with what is happening in the future and how they should prepare. I think that based off of my purpose statement, I will make sure to think of my college-aged audience when I write my paper because they need to be able to understand what is important.

Ethos: I will make sure to explain my sources and their credibility so my readers know that they can rely on my information being very creditable and believable. This will make my argument stronger.

Pathos: I will stress the fact that people are losing jobs to the changes in the working world. I will address college students in my paper to draw attention and to make the paper’s information personal.

Logos: I plan on adding lots of details about the quotes and describing fully in my own words to make sure my audience know that this is the most logical news about the future to believe.

Medium: For my medium I plan on structuring my paper in MLA format. My paper will be double spaced with one inch margins and 12 point Times New Roman font. I will make sure to have my last name and page numbers on each page. I will also have a work cited pages where I will state all my sources. With the proper MLA format my paper will look much more professional and educational so my argument will be taken seriously.  I will also have no pictures in my paper to make it more official. A paper with pictures is too fun and my topic is serious so I will not have pictures. My font will also only be black because I want my paper to be uniform. With all my specifications for my paper, my audience will take my paper seriously and will understand my argument.

Argument: For my argument, I plan to be assertive but also companionate. I want my audience to understand that these future changes are not just a theory but a fact for what people should expect in the next few years. I also want my audience to feel that I care about their futures so they will continue reading my paper. My audience will also understand my seriousness and will want to act on my argument to protect their future jobs.

Closing Statement for Rhetorical Analysis

When comparing my design plan and purpose statement and my final paper I feel that I have done exactly what I wanted to do. My pre-writing reflects exactly what I did in my paper. I feel that I did a good job really analyzing the website and searching for as many rhetoric examples in the images and text as possible. I did my font in 11 point instead of 12 point because when I reviewed the paper, the text looked too large and awkward in the paper. I also used images I found on Google instead of using the images on the website because I was unable to copy the images. I was able to find pictures similar to the website so it all worked out well.

My photo essay was a lot different from my rhetorical analysis paper. The photo essay had a lot less text and more focus on the images while the rhetorical analysis was the opposite. Although, images were very important in both papers, the rhetorical analysis focuses on the text too. The photo essay was more of a narrative type of paper; it told a story the abuse some farm animals have to endure. The rhetorical analysis was more of an educational essay that searched deep in the Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats website to discover how the author used ethos, pathos, and logos to convince people to buy their product. The photo essay also was in APA format and the rhetorical analysis was in MLA format. I think the rhetorical analysis was MLA because it makes the paper proper and well organized so the reader can follow my work. The audience was also different for the two papers. My audience for the photo essay was any person at consuming age. My audience for the rhetorical analysis was college-aged students. This made my writing style change because people in college understand what I am analyzing and consuming-aged people may need things simplified because they may not have been in school for a long time. Overall, I think I did a good job on both papers and I am proud to show off my work.

Visual and Rhetorical Analysis of a Website

Purpose Statement and Design Plan for Rhetorical Analysis

Statement of Purpose
Purpose:  I am writing a rhetorical analysis on the Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats website because I feel that it has everything I am looking for in regards to the analysis of ethos, pathos, and logos of the pictures and text. I think the website is fun and colorful and I like to eat shredded mini wheat. I hope that after my audience reads my essay they will have a good understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos and will know how it applied in the Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats website. I wanted to communicate this website to other because I did a paper and presentation about a Strawberry Mini Wheats ad last year in College Writing 1 and I won a contest for it. I know Kellogg’s ads are full of rhetorical devices so I knew I could do a very good essay on their website. The best possible outcome of my essay would be that my audience would be well aware of the rhetorical devices and agree with my ideas on the Frosted Mini Wheats website. The worst possible outcome would be that people would not understand what ethos, pathos, and logos are so they would not understand anything from the analysis. To make the outcome of the paper positive, I need to make sure to elaborate what ethos, pathos, and logos means in my introduction to help my audience understand the analysis.
Audience:  My audience for my essay should be about college-aged students. They should have at least a year of English in college and should be interested in the topic. I think my audience should also like to eat Frosted Mini Wheats so that they will be interested in my topic. Lewis sells Frosted Mini Wheats at every food court and store so Lewis students would be a good audience for me. I also think my students should be around college age because many college students eat cereal for breakfast when they are in a rush. I think college students would be able to relate to my topic.
Context:  For my time of communication, I feel that I should have my audience read my essay in the morning. My audience may have had breakfast already or may not have eaten at all. Food always draws in people attention and especially if they are hungry. The place of communication should be in a classroom. My essay is a proper rhetorical analysis that is very educational. Being in the classroom my audience will have the state of mind that they are learning so they can fully grasp my argument and its parts. The time and place really shape the expectations of the audience. If I had my audience read my essay at a different time or place they may not think about my argument or they may just not read it at all. My time and place makes the audience really think about the topic and understand my argument.
Design Plan
Strategy:  For my strategy, I plan to use an essay to bring forth my argument. I plan to add pictures from the website of the “Minis” characters and snapshots from the site to help my audience to visualize what I am explaining. I will also state the parts of the website and stay what they have to do with the rhetorical analysis.
Ethos: I will make my paper very proper and similar to an analysis one would find in a textbook. This will help my audience understand that I know what I will be talking about. I want to sound very professional when the audience reads my paper.
Pathos: I am adding in the pictures from the website that I feel are appealing to the emotions. I think the “Minis” characters they use for advertisement are cute so I plan on incorporating them into my text.
Logos: I will be very descriptive and give many facts from the website to explain my argument. Adding in lots of facts will help make my work more credible and will help the audience understand better.
Medium: For my medium, I plan to present my paper in essay form. I am going to add the pictures from the website to help with my argument. I plan to make my paper in MLA format but I am going to use Calisto MT font because I think it looks more proper than Times New Roman. My font will also be in black and 12 font with a double space. The audience will feel less overwhelmed by the long text if it is in double space. I feel this will give the best possible outcome for my argument of my rhetorical analysis of the Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats website.

Arrangement: For the arrangement, I am going to make my essay in proper MLA format. I will start with my introduction and then body paragraphs and I will then have my conclusion but I will not title each section of the paper. I am going to have my pictures on the right side of the page so the audience can read the text first and then analyze the photos. I feel this will help my audience get my topic and to be able to link the pictures with my analysis. I will have a Work Cited page after my essay stating all of my sources. My arrangement is very generic and typical for an educational essay so my audience will read the text and understand because they are used to writing papers in the similar format.

Closing Statement

In my design plan, I was hoping to really affect my audience with my message. I made irony with the pictures and descriptions to make the audience really feel bad for the animals that were abused on the animal cruelty farms. After I showed my presentation to a working in the writing center, for my peer review, I was very happy with the results. She said that the PowerPoint was very hard to read because she felt so bad for the animals. She also liked that I added ideas to end the cruelty. Adding the ideas helped give my audience some options of what they could do if they want to fight farm animal abuse.

Photo Essay

Narrative: During some free time, before I went into work, I was on Facebook. As I was scrolling through the many diverse posts, I saw one titled “How Bacon is Made,” and I decided to watch the video. Pigs in the video were kicked and thrown around and piglets were pulled out of the sows and slammed head first onto the cold concrete ground of their pig pens. To slaughter the pigs, they were hung by their feet (alive!) and sliced all the way down their bellies to then die from vascular shock (extreme blood loss). The video was horrific and gruesome; I could not believe how cruel farm workers were to the animals. This sparked my interest in researching foundations that fought against this cruelty. I found a foundation called “Mercy for Animals” which works to get justice for animals that cannot defend themselves. “Mercy for Animals” does hidden investigations to expose these farm factories that practice animals cruelty. On the site, there were many videos and names of well known farms that were caught doing unspeakable things to the poor animals. I decided to use those farms on the site to show the brutality and to state the names of the brands to get the audience thinking. The animals I have decided to picture are from The Center in Palos Heights. These animals are healthy and thriving in a safe and caring environment. I want to present irony in my pictures to the descriptions underneath to show total opposites of care for farm animals. I want my audience to feel compassion for the animals pictured from The Center and then, they will feel more hateful towards the farms that do not care for their animals. My hope is that my photo essay will persuade my audience to help fight against the abuse and become less blind to the horrors that take place every day.

Statement of Purpose and Design Plan for Photo Essay

Statement of Purpose

Purpose:  I was on Facebook before work one day to pass the time because I at work early. As I scrolled through my friend’s posts, ads, and news, I saw a video of how bacon is made. I was intrigued to watch the video but soon turned it right off because of how horrifyingly graphic it was. The pigs were thrown around and beaten; baby pigs were treated like rag dolls, and pigs were alive as they were cut straight down their bellies to be slaughters. I could not believe this was real. This terrible video motivates me to write about the treatment of farm animals to make people aware of the horrors that lurk behind our meat production.  I hope that from showing people the truth about livestock treatment they will agree with my views and stop supporting the abuse. The best outcome of my paper would be to make people aware enough to stop the abuse by not buying the projects anymore. The worst outcome of my work would be for people to not take me seriously and continue to buy the products from farms committing animal abuse. I hope that people can stand with me to fight against livestock abuse and help make those farms end their abusive ways.

Audience:  The audience I am aiming for to read my paper is people who would care about the treatment of animals and people who are willing to stop buying from the brands that are doing these horrible things. They should be of age to be considered a consumer (about 18 and older) and can be of any race or gender.  The audience reading my papers should also be open-minded to the idea of how terrible livestock is treated.  After reading my paper and seeing the pictures I present throughout it, my audience should think about how they could help to fight against animal abuse and how they might help and sympathize with animals going through this treatment. They should feel horrified and upset and they should be very interested in trying to avoid the brands committing the livestock abuse. All of the qualities listed are ideal characteristics of my audience should be present to make my paper more persuasive and appealing.

Context:  The time that my audience should see my paper is when they have free time. I want to make sure that they have enough time to really think about the points I bring up and the examples I state so they can form their own view from the topic. The place where my audience should view my work is at home or in a comfortable place. Being in a comfortable place will make the reader feel like my work is something they are reading voluntarily and something they would like to read and investigates for themselves. I want my paper to have the same feel to the reader and they would feel curling up on a rainy day reading a book, I want them to feel as intrigued as I was went I first saw the “How Bacon is Made” video. The time and place means everything to how the audience will react to my work. If they are reading my paper in a waiting room or an office or looking at it quick before heading off somewhere they may not get to think about what they had just read. I want my audience to really have deep thoughts about my topic so that they may feel the same why I do about it.

Design Plan

Strategies: The way I want to portray my topic is in a fun but serious way. I want people to be interested in my topic but also know how serious it is. I want to show pictures of farm animals that catch the emotional side of my audience so that then they feel as hurt by the farmer’s treatment to the animals as I did. I will talk about my topic with a relaxed tone but I will also be serious about my concerns. I want to take in the audience and convince them to feel the way I do. I will use ethos, pathos, and logos to capture my audience’s attention.
For ethos, I will portray myself as a big advocate for the justice for animals. I will stay on focus and give lots of examples of how the treatment of animals is unfair.
For pathos, I will use pictures of the animals that live at a farm near my house to pull on the heartstrings of my audience. Everyone loves to see pictures of cute farm animals but after I explain the instances of how badly they can be treated, my audience will feel upset and sad and will want to fight against the abuse.
For logos, I will use facts from research that I have done to present that farm animal abuse is happening. The facts will make my topic more real and it will make my word more credible.

Medium: For my medium, I have decided I want portray my topic in a way that looks like a picture book. People do not like to read pages and pages of an issue and can lose interest fast. If the audience loses interest then there is no point in the presenting information at all; if the audience is bored, then your message is not truly spoken for. I will use large images and will use a good amount of writing to keep my audience with me. I will have my topic projected on a PowerPoint and will make the background a dark color to keep the focus on the topic. Having the dark background creates a feeling of mourning and seriousness. I will make my PowerPoint presentation eight to ten pages to fully explain my topic and get my facts across to the audience. My font that I will use will be proper but also a little more relaxed so the audience does not feel like they are going to an assignment for class. My images will have natural hue and saturation so the audience sees how the images are original and the animals featured are relaxed and happy.

Arrangement: For my arrangement of my topic, I will have my eight to ten slide PowerPoint posted on my blog. I will arrange the slides from least severe treatment to worst to build up the emotion towards the topic. I will mix the normal pictures of the animals with the horrific examples of animal abuse to really work the audience and to draw in as much emotion as possible. The pictures will take up most of the pages and I will have the words placed underneath the picture. Doing this will cause the audience to focus on the picture first and then the writing so that they feel more upset about the abuse. My hope is that if I can work my audience enough, they will agree that farm animal abuse is bad and will feel like they should try and fight against it too.

Testing: To make sure that my hopes can work on the audience and to make sure my communication is effective, I will use students from class to peer review my work. By doing this, I am targeting my preferred audience and testing to see if my topic does what its supposed to do. I will also have my friend from home come with me to take the pictures. I will have her make sure that my argument is clear by the pictures.

Argument: Farm animals can be treated poorly
Claim 1: Story of a farm that is abusive to the animals
Claim 2: Story 2
Claim 3: Story 3
Pictures: Pictures of cows, chickens, ducks, sheep and goats from the local farm
Order: From least intense story to most intense story to bring out lots of emotion in the audience

What matters to me the most is the health of all people and animals. I feel that no matter if your a white male or a pig, everyone should be treated in a respectful and caring manner. Being treated in a wrong way for a long time has been proven to cause illness in people and animals.I am interested in investigating the treatment of people and animals and how it effects their health. I am very interested to see if eating meat people eat from animals that were abused can cause the meat to make people ill. I want to learn the significance of illness in animals and people and their treatment. I want to investigate farms near by and ask questions about animal's care, food, shelter, and the health of the animals.
